Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) offers various training courses each year for emergency management coordinators, elected officials, and members of law enforcement, fire protection, public works, and volunteer agencies. Information about upcoming courses can be found at WEM's Training Portal. You can register online for these courses by creating an account in the Training Portal.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also provides an Independent Study Program consisting of numerous self-paced courses such as Emergency Manager: An Orientation to the Position, An Introduction to Hazardous Materials, Animals in Disasters, Introduction to the Incident Command System, and Emergency Planning. L-105: Public Information Basics

Course Description: To equip participants with the skills needed to be full or part-time PIOs, including oral and written communications; understanding and working with the media; and basic tools and techniques to perform effectively as a PIO, both in the proactive/ advocacy times and crisis/ emergency response.

G402: National Incident Management System Overview for Senior Officials (Executives, Elected, & Appointed)

Class Times: 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Course Description: The purpose of this course is to familiarize Senior Officials (executives, elected and appointed officials, city/county managers, agency administrators, etc.) with their role in supporting incident management within the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

NWS Storm Spotter Training

Date: 06/15/2025
Class Times: 01:00 pm - 03:00 pm or 06:00 pm - 08:00 pm
Course Information: No registration is needed, and training is provided at no cost. Training sessions will be about 2 hours long each. The first hour will cover safety aspects for spotters/general public while the second hour will cover the essentials of what you need to know to report severe weather to the NWS.  Each session will cover the same information, so you only need to attend one.
