Babies exposed to drugs in the womb may be born premature and underweight. Fetal exposure to drugs and alcohol can slow the child’s intellectual development and affect behavior later in life.

Unborn babies exposed to heroin/opiate use during pregnancy can be born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). NAS occurs when opiates pass through the placenta to the baby during pregnancy, causing the baby to become dependent along with the mother.

Recent clinical trials demonstrate that Buprenorphine treatment of opioid-dependent mothers is safe for both the unborn child and the mother.

Public health nurses will help you with medical and educational needs regarding pregnancy, including pregnancy testing, prenatal and postpartum care coordination, and teen pregnancy. Through a series of visits, public health nurses will bring you information about you and your soon-to-be baby. Public Health nurses provide services in the home and through telephone consultation.
