Waukesha County Medical Examiner's Office: Permits & Fees
Cremation Permit
2025 Fee: $302
A Cremation Permit Request Form must be submitted to our office for all permit requests.
State law requires a permit before a cremation can occur. No cremation may take place until 48 hours after the pronounced time of death.
If you choose to have your loved one’s body cremated, your funeral director will notify our office. A brief, non-invasive external body exam will need to be completed by one of our death investigators. Our office will also review the signed death certificate. Following these steps, our office will issue a cremation permit to the funeral home.
Death Certificate
2025 Fee: $97
This fee is applied when our office needs to certify cause of death. Our office will start all death records in SVRIS when we are the certifier. Funeral homes will be granted access to the death record after we confirm funeral home selection with the next of kin.
Transport
2025 Fee: $233
This fee applies when our office incurs an expense for the transport of a body to our facility.
Disinterment
2025 fee: $65
An original, notarized Disinterment Permit Request Form and payment in full is required before we will issue a disinterment permit. Permit requests can be faxed ahead of time to allow for preparation of the document.
