Juvenile Citation FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:
Do I have to appear in court on my citation?

If your citation indicates that you must apear in court, then yes, you must appear.  Please review your citation - it indicates if it is necessary to appear or not.

Q:
How do I request an extension for paying a fine or citation?

You must write a letter to the Juvenile Court requesting the extension with an explanation of why you need more time.  The Clerk will then contact you with the court official's decision.

Q:
I cannot attend my citation hearing date. How do I adjourn (have it rescheduled) the hearing to another day?

To request an adjournment, you must put your request to the Juvenile Court Judge in writing, including the reason for the request.  If the Judge determines that the reason for the request is valid, it may be rescheduled one time only.  Please keep in mind that the Juvenile Court only hears these matters on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, and all citations must be heard by the Court within 30 days of the issuance of the citation.

Q:
The Court ordered that I do community service instead of paying a fine for my citation. How do I request more time to complete my community service?

You must write a letter to the Juvenile Court requesting the extension with an explanation of why you need more time.  The Clerk will then contact you with the Court's decision.

Q:
What happens if I do not appear in court?

If you do not appear in court and did not pay the citation before the court date, the Court will enter a default judgment (find you guilty of the citation) and may order a capias for your arrest.
